Why is my switchboard tripping?

· Gloform Electrics · REC 27575

If a circuit keeps dropping out, or the whole house goes dark when you turn the kettle on, the switchboard is trying to tell you something. Resetting the same switch all day is not a fix.

Open switchboard with labelled circuits
An open board. Labels help when one circuit keeps tripping.

What “tripping” usually means

Something on that circuit is drawing too much current, leaking to earth, or shorting. A breaker or residual current device (RCD / safety switch) opens to protect the wiring and the people in the building. That is the board doing its job. The question is why it keeps happening.

Homes and small businesses across Melbourne call us for the same pattern: one room goes out, the switch is reset, and it trips again within minutes. Sometimes it only fails when the dryer or air conditioner starts. Sometimes it is random. All of those need a look at the board and the circuit, not another reset.

Common causes we see on site

  • Overloaded circuits. Too many heaters, chargers, and appliances on one run. The breaker heats up and opens.
  • RCD / safety switch trips. Moisture in a bathroom fitting, a damaged lead, or a fault to earth. The RCD opens even when the load is light.
  • Failing appliances. A fridge compressor, a pump, or a powerboard that arcs when it warms up.
  • Damaged cable or a loose connection. In walls, roofs, or at the board itself. Heat and vibration make these worse over time.
  • An ageing board. Old fuse carriers, mixed gear, or a board that was never labelled after past work. Harder to isolate, easier to misdiagnose.

Energy Safe Victoria expects electrical work to be done by a registered electrical contractor. Guessing with the cover off is how people get hurt. If the board is hot, buzzing, smelling of burn, or the main switch will not stay in, leave it and call.

What you can safely do before we arrive

Note which switch moved and what was on at the time. Unplug the last thing you switched on. Do not keep forcing a switch that will not stay closed. If lights are dim, outlets are warm, or you smell burning, shut the power at the main switch if you can reach it safely, then call 1300 456 367.

For non-urgent trips, a short note on the quote form helps: which circuit, how often, and whether rain or a particular appliance is involved. We look at what is actually needed: the board, the wiring, the access.

How we trace the fault

On a repairs call we start at the board. We check labelling, test the RCD or RCBO, and isolate the circuit. Then we walk the run: fittings, junctions, and the load that keeps taking it out. Sometimes the fix is a failed fitting. Sometimes it is an overloaded circuit that needs splitting. Sometimes the board itself needs an upgrade so each circuit has proper earth leakage protection. That work sits under switchboards and power.

You get a price before any work starts. Or we can do and charge when that suits the job. All our work carries a 2-year workmanship warranty. A Certificate of Electrical Safety is issued when the job needs one.

When a trip is an emergency

No power to the fridge and freezers, a board that will not reset, water near electrics after a storm, or a burning smell: treat it as urgent. We work 24/7 across Melbourne. Call 1300 456 367 and say what stopped working.

If only one circuit is out and the rest of the house is fine, note the label on the switch and leave the failed circuit off until we arrive. That keeps the rest of the place live and stops you chasing a reset all night.

If you are a builder or facilities manager sending multiple sites, the same number applies. We already work alongside teams such as JTW Building Group and Building Facilities on building and strata-style jobs, and we keep the fault notes clear so the next visit is not a guess.
